Đèn pha HID (xenon)
Đèn pha xenon có tên gọi chính thức là đèn pha phóng điện cường độ cao (HID), được xem là giải pháp khả thi hơn so với đèn halogen nhờ nhiệt độ màu và lượng ánh sáng tạo ra.
Nguyên tắc hoạt động của đèn HID về cơ bản giống bóng đèn neon. Xe sẽ có một bóng đèn kín chứa đầy khí và điện cực ở mỗi đầu và một dòng điện chạy ngang qua. Đèn pha HID thực chất sử dụng hỗn hợp kim loại – halide và chỉ dựa vào khí xenon trong thời gian khởi động. Một trong những vấn đề chính của đèn HID là thời gian cần để hỗn hợp khí bên trong đạt tới nhiệt độ hoạt động và tỏa ánh sáng cường độ mạnh.
Vậy ưu điểm của đèn pha HID là gì? Đèn pha xenon cho hiệu quả lớn hơn nhờ lượng ánh sáng tỏa ra nhiều hơn. Theo thống kê chính thức, bóng đèn xenon sản sinh 3.000 lumen và 90 milicandela (mcd) (đơn vị đo cường độ sáng của đèn LED)/m2, trong khi đèn halogen chỉ sản sinh 1.400 lumen và 30 mcd/m2.
Trên thực tế, bóng đèn xenon cần nhiều công suất hơn khi khởi động, song khi đã đạt tới nhiệt độ tiêu chuẩn, sẽ tiêu tốn ít công suất hơn so với các bóng đèn thông thường. Ngoài ra, bóng đèn pha HID cần nhiều thời gian hơn để đạt tới cường độ sáng mạnh nhất và không được đánh giá cao như dạng đèn chiếu xa riêng biệt.
Một số xe hiện nay được trang bị đèn chiếu gần dạng HID và các bóng chiếu xa riêng. Trên những dòng xe cao cấp hơn, hệ thống đèn pha HID thực hiện đồng thời hai chức năng: chiếu gần và chiếu xa nhờ cơ chế sử dụng bóng cơ học trong gương phản xạ ô tô để thay đổi hướng chiếu sáng tương ứng.
Một số đèn pha xenon có thể gây hại tới sức khỏe của chúng ta, bởi chúng có chứa các chất độc hại như thủy ngân kim loại. Một số quốc gia đã ban hành các quy định riêng nghiêm cấm sử dụng các chất này, song điều đó cũng đồng nghĩa với chi phí sản xuất và sửa chữa cao hơn.
Cuối cùng, lượng ánh sáng chói sinh ra từ đèn pha có thể gây phiền hà cho các lái xe khác trên đường, đặc biệt là khi giao thông đông đúc, dẫn tới gia tăng tai nạn, bên cạnh thực trạng vượt quá tốc độ và các vấn đề kỹ thuật.
Đèn pha LED
Dạng đèn này được trang bị trên các mẫu xe sản xuất hàng loạt, song nó cũng có nhiều điểm hạn chế. Nguyên lý làm việc của đèn pha LED tương đối phức tạp, nhưng có thể hình dung như sau: các electron âm chuyển động quanh các “lỗ” tích điện dương thông qua một chất bán dẫn. Khi một electron tự do rơi vào lỗ có mức năng lượng thấp hơn, nó sẽ giải phóng năng lượng dưới dạng photon (phần nhỏ nhất của ánh sáng) trong một quá trình được gọi là điện phát.
Quá trình này được lặp lại hàng ngàn lần mỗi giây để tạo ra ánh sáng liên tục, phát ra từ đi-ốt phát quang (LED) có chiều rộng 2 mm.
Đặc điểm quan trọng nhất của hệ thống đèn pha LED: chúng cần rất ít công suất để hoạt động so với các bóng đèn halogen cổ điển. Nhìn chung, đèn pha LED nằm ở giữa đèn halogen và đèn HID về độ phát quang, song cho ánh sáng tập trung hơn và cũng được thiết kế nhiều hình dáng khác nhau.
Không giống đèn pha halogen, đèn pha LED không tỏa nhiệt khi phát sáng, không sinh nhiệt dưới đáy bộ phát (chủ yếu là bộ chip) khi điện đi qua, bởi vậy, gây rủi ro tiềm ẩn cho các chi tiết lắp ghép cạnh đó cũng như cáp kết nối. Đó là lý do tại sao đèn pha LED cần hệ thống làm mát giống như bộ tản nhiệt hoặc quạt để tránh hiện tượng tan chảy.
Và những hệ thống làm mát này được đặt tại khoang động cơ, nơi không đủ mát để hệ thống nào đó có thể duy trì nhiệt độ thích hợp. Đèn pha LED cũng khá “kén” xe và đắt hơn đèn xenon HID.
